Cats for Adoption

It’s no question that cats are some of the most popular pets in America. Cats are loving and affectionate but are also self-reliant. They require less maintenance than dogs as they are known to be independent pets. Cats are wonderful pets and provide a lifetime of love to their owners.

Commonly Asked Questions

Adopting a new cat is an exciting experience but can also be overwhelming. Have a question about Helen Woodward Animal Center or our current roster of furry friends? Explore some of our most frequently asked questions below, or contact us today to speak to an adoption specialist to learn more!

How do you get a cat in San Diego?

A great way to get a new cat is to adopt through our pet adoption program at the Center! Your new furry family member will have received a medical examination, spay or neuter surgery, vaccinations, tons of treatment, learning and compassion, and a microchip.

Pet stores and breeders often charge excessive fees. Adopting cats from shelters and rescue groups is usually much less expensive with spaying/neutering procedures and vaccinations are taken care of by rescue animal shelters. At Helen Woodward Animal Center, we seek to find these animals’ forever homes as quickly as possible. You can visit our adoption center with no appointment needed. We are open from 11 AM until 6 PM, Monday – Friday, and 10 AM to 6 PM on the weekends!

Where can I adopt multiple kittens?

Cats have a reputation for being solitary animals and are often happy without the companionship of their species. Changes in behavior such as irregular sleeping, eating, or grooming habits may indicate that your cat is lonely. However, many cats can benefit from having a feline buddy. At Helen Woodward Animal Center we often have bonded cats and kittens, based on our experience whenever we see that a pet needs the support and companionship of another pet we bond them. A bonded pair is required to go home with the same adoptive family and don’t worry about the double adoption fee. We have a kitten BOGO, when you adopt two felines, you only have to pay the adoption fee of one!

Kittens are usually available seasonally from May through November. If you are approved for numerous kittens, and your home is equipped for a family of felines, multiple kitten adoption is possible.

Does Helen Woodward offer kitten adoption?

Yes! Helen Woodward Animal Center does offer kitten adoption. However, kittens are seasonal, and litters often start being received in May and are available through November.

How long does it take to adopt a cat in San Diego?

Here at Helen Woodward Animal Center, we work hard to find the best home for every cat that comes through our door. When you find a cat that you wish to adopt, you can proceed to fill out the cat adoption request form. As soon as this form has been completed, the Helen Woodward team will review your application and give you approval as soon as possible. We want these animals to find a forever home fast, so apply as soon as you’re interested.

What to know before adopting a kitten?

Before bringing a new kitten home, it is essential to do your research. Raising a kitten is a much different experience than caring for an adult cat. Kittens have boundless energy and curiosity, which means they require lots of time and energy. Before bringing a new kitten home, you need to kitten-proof your home by blocking off any windows and vents, removing electric cords, and discarding objects that may pose a choking hazard. When you first bring your kitten home, it’s essential to set aside a room for them to get used to their surroundings before exploring the rest of the home. Make sure to furnish the space with a litter box, food and water, dishes, bedding, and toys.

You will need some supplies to take care of your new kitten. Here is a quick checklist of some essentials you’ll need:

  •  Quality kitten food  Cat treats
  •  Food and water dishes  Litter box and cat litter  Cat bed
  •  Cat carrier
  •  Collar or ID tag
  •  Cat brush or flea comb  Scratching post
  •  Kitten-safe toys
