Penelope and her Peas

Tabby cat with her litter of babies

We are so happy to have a new addition to our Follow The Litter blog! The first pregnancy of the year brought to us 5 beautiful peas along with their mom. This beautiful family came from a local rescue partner and we couldn’t be happier to care for them during their early days.

Penelope brought her beautiful babies to this world on February 17 and they are currently in foster care. These little peas look so alike that their foster mom had to put colored hair ties on them to tell them apart. They still have a few weeks before they become available, but if you want to get updates on their journey Follow The Litter!

All 5 kitties are black and barely 2 weeks old, as they grow older we hope to find specific characteristics to identify each one of them. In the meantime, Palmer is green, Paprika is purple, Parker is orange, Piglet is green, and Porsche is red. Have a look at what this bundle of babies likes to do throughout the day!

They LOVE TO CUDDLE!!!

Update 2

Let’s take a look back at when our beautiful momma Penelope was carrying her peas.

As you may know, many shelters are at full capacity and when a pregnant cat or dog arrives they don’t have the space and/or funding to care for her. Penelope was lucky to have been found by one of our rescue partners who as mentioned wasn’t able to care for her but made sure to find a safe place where she would be able to give birth to 5 beautiful kitties.

When Penelope arrived at the Center she was taken to our Companion Animal Hospital to get X-Rays. Here we found out that she was expecting 5 babies and our veterinarian was able to give proper instructions on which steps were next for Penelope. Penelope had to go to a foster home where she was able to successfully deliver her babies, and they currently are there as they wait for the kitties to grow older.

Update 3

At one week old, Penelope’s babies were barely reaching 400 grams. The foster family continues to keep our team updated with growth and behavioral details “All the babies are doing fine starting to be a little more mobile and are gaining weight good. Miss Penelope is still being a great mom and being a sweetheart”.

A foster family is in charge of providing the newborn kitties with anything their mom might not be able to give them or help them with. Often, foster parents are around to tuck them in if it’s cold, provide a safe space for the litter, and make sure the babies are feeding from their mom. They also have to monitor if the babies are growing and keep track of their weight to help our medical team determine when the kitties will be ready for their spay/neuter surgeries.

Due to Hurricane Hilary, all  departments will be closing at 3pm today.  Stay safe!
