Lucky’s story is another that started tragic but with a lot of teamwork and dedication, the Center was able to change his life for the better.
At just 3 months old, Lucky was found alone on the street with a major injury to his back leg. He had likely been hit by a car. Good Samaritans rushed him to the Center, where Development Specialist Aliciá Ayala was outside at a check-in table for our 50th anniversary event. The couple approached her with Lucky in a box and barely breathing. Aliciá jumped into action – running across the Center’s campus to get him to Companion Animal Hospital.
At the time, Lucky was flea-ridden and badly hurt. Our veterinarians believed he had suffered serious nerve damage to his back leg. He was given pain medication to help ease his discomfort.
After weeks of physical therapy, our medical team decided it would be best for Lucky to amputate his leg to limit the risk of him dragging the limb and causing future infections. Even after having his leg removed, Lucky did not slow down.
UPDATE:
One of our Animal Care Technicians, Porcha Lombardi, adopted Lucky! Lucky’s new name is Gino, and he has adapted very well to his new family. Gino is constantly entertained and loved by his two older siblings. Porcha couldn’t help but fall in love with this sweet boy while she visited him every day when he was healing after surgery at the Center. “It’s amazing to see animals who have been injured and they have these special needs be so resilient and full of life. It’s a special part of my heart. He’s super special. I hope that he lives the best life he can live and I can provide that for him.”
