An Australian Cattle Dog blend with a golden heart came to Helen Woodward Animal Center at the beginning of 2024. He was only two months old and the staff immediately fell in love with him. The Australian Cattle Dog blend spent only three days on the adoption floor before being scooped up to what he thought was his forever home. However, his happy ending wouldn’t last forever as the family — unable to provide the life the dog deserved — decided to make the tough decision to return him.
Upon his return, the Center named the Australian Cattle Dog blend Brad and made him available for adoption again as soon as possible. His second stint at the Center lasted far longer than his first. Despite his gorgeous golden coat and shining personality, nobody would take Brad home. The Center’s Animal Care Technicians (ACT’s) were left stumped as Brad extended his stay from days to weeks to months.
“He didn’t have anything wrong with him,” Courtney Williams, Volunteer & Animal Care Supervisor said. “The worst thing you could say about him was that he was a little energetic, but that’s normal for Australian Cattle Dogs.”
Months of unsuccessful meetings started to wear on Brad and he started to become a little shy. Other puppies would give adopters immediate affection — which won them over — while Brad would take a little while to warm up to new people. The ACT’s grew nervous as shyness plus a higher energy dog usually leads to very long term stays at the Center.
However, in the middle of August a family with Australian Cattle Dog experience found Brad’s golden coat and shining personality irresistible. They had a face to face meeting with him and knew it would be a perfect fit. They drove home with a new fluffy member of the family, and Brad had finally found his permanent people.
