Our Treats Are Sweeter Than Yours!

Helen Woodward Animal Center Will Trade Kids Sweets for Something Sweeter…

Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.  (Oct. 30, 2018) – Following Halloween, Helen Woodward Animal Center is offering parents a strong incentive to get kids to give up weighty bags of candy.  Orphan pets (named after favorite sweets and nick-named “The Candy Critters) are hoping that trick-or-treaters will knock on their door and give them a forever home.  The Center encourages children 12 and under (with approval of their parents) to take home something irresistible that will never give them cavities.  From Thursday, November 1st through Sunday, November 4th, kids are invited to turn in their Halloween candy and receive a discount off the adoption of a furry friend – sure to provide them a lifetime of sweetness.

Over the last several years, concerned dental offices throughout the country have advised parents to halt the excessive ingesting of sweets gathered on Halloween night by offering to swap out candy for fun activities or a desired item.  Indeed, this year the candy industry expects to bring in $9 billion in Halloween retail sales leading the healthcare industry to remind the public that sugar is directly linked to obesity, tooth decay, and diabetes.

A beloved pet, on the other hand, is not only the sweetest treat around but has been credited with incredible health benefits including lower blood pressure, increased activity, decreased anxiety, and increased positivity.

With this in mind, Helen Woodward Animal Center invites children (along with their approving parents) to swap their October 31st loot for a discount on adoption fees.  Every 50 pieces of candy receives $10 off!  (Maximum 400 pieces per canine adoption fee/ maximum 250 pieces per feline adoption fee.)

“We love this promotion for so many reasons,” stated Helen Woodward Animal Center Adoptions Service Manager Ashley Freeman.  “It gives parents a great way to incentivize their kids, keeps kids healthier, and finds homes for our orphan pets.  Best of all, it teaches a great lesson about prioritizing and sacrifice when you take on the responsibility of a new pet.  Those are both important things for kids to understand about pet ownership.”

All gathered candy will be assembled into small gift bags and offered to homebound elderly during upcoming AniMeals drop offs.  The program that feeds the pets of limited mobility clients is happy to provide something sweet for our human friends too!
