A t-shirt tote bag craft that’s good for the earth!

Show your appreciation for the planet this Earth Day by creating this reusable tote bag!

Earth Day was first celebrated on April 22, 1970 and promotes awareness of environmental protection and Earth conservation. It’s the perfect opportunity to discuss and learn about concepts like reducing, reusing, and recycling.

With this t-shirt tote bag you can both reduce and reuse! By selecting an old t-shirt that may otherwise have been thrown out, you’re able to reuse it and repurpose it for your shopping needs. Choosing a bag that is durable and washable means you rely less on single-use plastic bags which helps reduce waste.

Materials: T-shirt, scissors, ruler

Directions:

Step 1: Begin by laying the t-shirt on a flat surface and smoothing out all the wrinkles. Cut off the sleeves of the shirt.

Step 2: Next cut around the neckline. Make sure the sleeves are at least 3 inches wide. The wider the sleeves, the wider the handles of your bag will be. Depending on the length of your shirt, you may wish to cut off some of the bottom to make it shorter.

Step 3: Keep the bottom of the t-shirt lined up and cut the bottom of the shirt into ¾ to 1 inch wide by 2 inches tall “fringe.” Be sure to cut the front and back at the same time so your ties will line up.

Step 4: Flip the t-shirt inside out and start tying the front and back fringe pieces together to seal up the bottom.

Step 5: Flip the bag right side out, and you are done!

Enjoy using your reusable bag as a grocery bag, a shopping bag, or even your lunch bag and know that you are helping the environment this Earth Day and every day!

Due to Hurricane Hilary, all  departments will be closing at 3pm today.  Stay safe!
