A Fun Winter Craft that Helps Animals.

Pine Cone Bird Feeder

Pine cones can frequently be seen during wintertime as decoration, but they serve an important role for pine trees. The pine cone keeps the tree’s seeds safe by closing its scales to protect from wind, cold temperatures, and even animals. Once warmed up, the pine cone’s scales open up and release the seeds. These seeds then fall to the ground, and new pine trees can grow!

Once the pine cone has fallen to the ground, it can be made into a bird feeder! It is no longer useful to the pine tree, so it can be repurposed in a way that will benefit animals!

Materials: pine cone, nut butter, birdseed, crafting stick, string, paper plates, scissors

Directions

Step 1: Begin by using a crafting stick to spread nut butter onto the pine cone. This will allow the seeds to stick to the pine cone, so be sure to cover as much surface area of the pinecone as possible.

Step 2: Next pour the birdseed onto the pinecone over a plate or outside. Be sure to pour over the entire pine cone so all of the nut butter is covered.

Step 3: Lastly tie a string to one end of the pine cone.

Tie your pine cone to a tree branch and watch the birds enjoy a tasty snack!

Due to Hurricane Hilary, all  departments will be closing at 3pm today.  Stay safe!
