Training Tips for Pet Sitting

Preparing your pet for a sitter can be a tricky situation sometimes, but these few training tips will make sure to help both you and your sitter. Proper training is the best way to achieve a great experience when having a pet sitter as most animals are not familiar with their owners, leaving them in the care of others. Getting your pet to become comfortable with others can be tricky at first, which is why it is always best to ease them into social situations.

When it comes to your dog, you always want to make sure you start your training with a relaxed dog, as a nervous or excited dog doesn’t tend to focus much. Taking your dog to public spaces like a coffee shop or a dog-friendly restaurant is a great way to teach your pup to interact with others. When beginning to socialize your dog for the first time, keep the visits short and work up to longer ones each time. Try to choose an area in the establishment with the least traffic and work them up to introduce them to people. Too much stimulation for the dog can lead to poor training habits, so, when possible, try to limit your pup from presenting themselves to everyone and teach them only to greet people when you allow it.

Socializing your pup will make the pet sitter’s job much easier as a dog who is comfortable with other people won’t have any issues with a new person in the house. Always have a training bag prepared with some treats and poop bags when trying to teach your pup in public spaces. Rewarding your dog with treats is tricky. While we want to reward them for good behavior, we want to ensure not to reward them for every single action as this can lead to them only performing these good behaviors when stimulated with treats. Always remember that it is time to leave when your pet is not having a good time and looks tired or overwhelmed.
