At Helen Woodward Animal Center, it’s not uncommon for our team members to fall in love with the pets we care for. After all, our staff and volunteers are heroes who dedicate their time, love, and compassion to animals in need every single day.
Recently, one of our very own heroes found herself needing a little rescuing, too.
Jackie K. experienced what every pet lover fears most, the devastating loss of a furry family member. The grief was overwhelming, leaving an emptiness that felt impossible to fill. Still, through her sorrow, Jackie knew that one day, she might be ready to welcome another pet into her heart. She wasn’t sure when, but she decided to visit our adoption kennels, just to see how it felt.
At first, Jackie and her husband had planned to meet a young 10-week-old puppy. But as she walked past the kennels, another pair of eyes caught her attention, it was Maya (previously Diamond), a 5-month-old Labrador Retriever/Anatolian Shepherd blend. Something about Maya’s gentle expression, her calm yet curious energy, made Jackie pause. In that moment, something clicked.
Maya didn’t know it yet, but she was about to become the hero of this story.
Jackie and her husband asked to meet Maya, and the connection was instant. As they spent time together, it became clear, Maya wasn’t just the right dog for them. She was meant for them.
Many adopters seek out young puppies, hoping to experience every stage of their growth and training. But sometimes, fate has other plans. As Jackie put it, choosing Maya was nothing short of magical:
“She is a real light in our life right now and is blossoming more and more every day. She is crate trained, pee pad trained, toy/food motivated, very gentle, and a total daddy’s girl.”
Though Maya has only been in her new home for a short time, she’s already proving to be the perfect fit. She’s quickly learned her new name and mastered “sit.” She recently discovered tennis balls which are now one of her greatest joys, and loves zooming around after them. She sleeps on her back with her paws in the air, flashing her little teeth in total bliss. She showers her family with kisses and is determined to win over their cats, one tail wag at a time.
In the end, two heroes saved each other.
Jackie and her husband are beyond grateful for Maya and are already planning future adventures, from puppy training classes to Club Pet stays and even a camping trip this spring.
Sometimes, when we think we are rescuing them, they are the ones who rescue us.
