HAPPY DOGUST!

Helen Woodward Animal Center Celebrates Universal Birthday of Shelter Pets

Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.  (Jul. 31, 2020) – Those who have experienced the joy of rescuing a dog will often tell you of their wish to know more about their pup’s life before its adoption.  Each orphan canine holds secrets it will never be able to tell of an unknown past, including a very special day, its birthday! In 2008, the North Shore Animal League of America created an adorable day to tackle that question. Dogust is a day to celebrate adopted shelter dogs whose birthday is unknown. This Saturday, Aug. 1, Helen Woodward Animal Center is celebrating Dogust – the universal birthday for shelter dogs.

Every orphan pet that comes through the doors of Helen Woodward Animal Center is given an estimated age based upon data received from rescue partners, the adoption staff, and the Center’s medical team. Often a dog’s story is pieced together with the only basic information such as when the dog arrived at the Center, the condition of their teeth, or their developing personality.  Upon adoption, happy dogs wag into the arms of their new forever parents to complete their story puzzle. Dogust, celebrated on the first day of August yearly, is an opportunity for these shelter dogs to rejoice with their new loving families and mark the occasion of a birthday.

This Saturday, Aug. 1, Helen Woodward Animal Center invites adopters to celebrate their new furry friends with some special birthday activities planned.  Adopters can take their first family portrait in the Center’s Dogust Photo Booth. Adopted pets will go to their new forever homes with a special birthday gift from Helen Woodward Animal Center.

Helen Woodward Animal Center suggests these other ways for dog-loving San Diegans to celebrate Dogust:

  • Make a donation to Helen Woodward Animal Center to support the rescue of more orphan dogs and puppies from overburdened shelters all over the country.
  • Support the orphan pets at Helen Woodward Animal Center by donating towels or shopping the Center’s Amazon Wish List.
  • Tag @HWAC on social media to recognize  Helen Woodward Animal Center alums who are celebrating their birthdays.
  • Pamper your own rescue pup with extra pets, a long walk or with the pet’s favorite activity.
  • Encourage pet seeking friends and family to opt to adopt

In order to keep staff and clients safe, Helen Woodward Animal Center is following CDC guidelines for COVID-19 and facilitating adoptions by appointment only. To see a list of available orphan pets (updated in real time) and to schedule an appointment, head to animalcenter.org.
