Ensuring Rewarding Adoptions On National Puppy Day

Helen Woodward Animal Center and Blue Buffalo Set Adopters Up for Success…

Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.  (Mar. 22, 2022) – Across the nation, spring has sprung yielding green shoots, new blooms, and baby animals galore – which is only ONE of the many reasons animal-lovers should be celebrating National Puppy Day this Wednesday, March 23rd.  The adorable holiday not only provides social media users an endless stream of puppy photos to peruse, the day is also an important one to raise awareness about puppy mill concerns and encourage prospective pet owners to consider adoption.  In an effort to ensure successful puppy adoptions, Helen Woodward Animal Center is partnering with Blue Buffalo to offer a Puppy Starter Kit to all puppy adopters this National Puppy Day.

Established in 2006, National Puppy Day was founded to remind the public of the large number of puppies entering the shelter system.  Aware that the puppies’ fuzzy faces were their own best advertisements, the day puts some of the world’s cutest creatures in the forefront and asks the public to consider adding a furry family member to their household.

Last year, over 2,000 puppies went through the doors of Helen Woodward Animal Center and into the homes of loving families.  Center Adoption Services Director Hella Tyler emphasized the importance of successful adoptions.

“We don’t just want to get them adopted,” she explained. “We want them to find their forever homes.  As a dog gets older, it is often harder to get them adopted, especially after they’ve suffered the insecurity of being adopted, then being relinquished, reentering the shelter system and losing their security and routine.  We want every puppy to have the very best beginnings so that they can have the happy endings they deserve.”

To help with this goal, this National Puppy Day, Helen Woodward Animal Center and Blue Buffalo are partnering to gift each puppy-adopter with a Puppy Starter Kit that includes: a four-pound bag of Blue Buffalo puppy food; a puppy toy to help with teething; puppy pee pads to help with potty training; and Blue Buffalo puppy treats for positive reinforcement.

“Puppies are just babies with fur,” stated Helen Woodward Animal Care Supervisor Courtney Williams. “When adopting a puppy, it’s important to set up all the precautions and training you’d expect for any new baby entering your home.  That includes keeping them on a healthy, stable diet, making sure they get plenty of rest and working with them regularly to establish clear routines, through signals and verbal commands, as well as providing treats to reward good behavior.   And it’s worth it.  Puppies really adore people and they want to live their lives with us.  The little work we put into them is such a small fraction of the love they’ll give us in return.”

Helen Woodward Animal Center encourages animal-lovers and anyone looking to bring a pet into their home to consider rescue first, and support local animal shelters this National Puppy Day, Wednesday, March 23rd.  For more information, please contact Helen Woodward Animal Center Adoptions Department at: 858-756-4117 ext. 313, visit www.animalcenter.org or stop by at 6461 El Apajo Road in Rancho Santa Fe.
