Unboxing a Puppy Foster Starter Kit

Helen Woodward Animal Center’s volunteer fosters raise puppies, kittens, dogs and cats in their homes until the pets are ready to go available for adoption (an average of 1 to 3 weeks.) In other words, pet fostering is an all-access pass to unlimited, in-home puppy snuggles and kitten kisses! So how do you get the world’s best volunteer gig? You only need one thing: your time.

It’s true. Thanks to generous donations from the community, we’re able to provide our foster volunteers with every single supply they need for free. Each time our fosters take on a new assignment, they receive a box filled with the exact amount of supplies required for their furry charges. (Let’s use puppies as an example.)

What’s inside a puppy foster kit?

  • Exercise pen (x-pen)
  • Newspaper and potty pads
  • Blankets and towels
  • Dog beds
  • Toys
  • Food and water bowls
  • Dry and wet puppy food

The Center provides 100 percent of the medical care foster pets need. (Foster volunteers just need to bring the pets to appointments.) Our Foster Department is always available for questions by phone or email, and provides support and camaraderie in a closed Facebook group.

“Every time we send home fosters with their animals, we give them instructions on how to set up the space,” explains Morgan Hamm, Foster Program Supervisor at Helen Woodward Animal Center.

Pet Foster FAQs

Why do we make the process so easy for our foster volunteers? Simply put, we couldn’t save lives without them. Fosters allow us to rescue pets who require extra time or special care, such as nursing moms and babies or newborns who need to be bottle-fed.

“We would not be able to save those guys without fosters to give them constant care and love,” Hamm says. “It’s really rewarding and fun to see them go from teeny tiny little babies into real kittens and puppies.”

Due to Hurricane Hilary, all  departments will be closing at 3pm today.  Stay safe!
