Share warmth and hygiene with unhoused pets this winter.

2024 is an El Niño year for San Diego, and as a result, our winter season is predicted to be a cold and rainy one. While we bundle up, warm and dry in our homes, it is easy to forget that over 5,000 people are living unsheltered in our city—and that 5 to 20 percent of those people own pets.

Each year, Helen Woodward Animal Center’s Pets Without Walls program is looking to bring warmth, hygiene, and wellness to unhoused families and their pets by bringing their animals sweaters and jackets, cozy blankets, hygiene supplies, and food with our annual Cozy Critters donation drive. Older and smaller dogs often struggle to retain body heat, and being wet makes it even more difficult for them to maintain the temperature their bodies need to survive. While blankets and sweaters for dogs might seem like a luxury to those of us with homes, these items may be the only thing keeping unhoused pets safe from the biting chill of a winter rain. Additionally, tooth brushing, bathing, and keeping fur coats brushed are critical for any pet’s health, reducing secondary health complications and preventing expensive skin and dental care down the line.

You can make this winter warmer, cleaner, and safer for unhoused pets and their families – donate necessary items today!

Due to Hurricane Hilary, all  departments will be closing at 3pm today.  Stay safe!
