Obesity in Pets

Obesity is a problem that can affect all pets, big or small. But you can help them stay healthy! Here are a few ways to keep your pet as happy and healthy as possible.
Monitor Their Weight: Weigh your pet every month. Keep track and make sure they stay in the appropriate zone for their breed/age. If you’re not sure what an appropriate zone is, ask your veterinarian!
Measure Food Accurately: Overfeeding your pet can drastically contribute to weight gain and obesity. Make sure to use a measuring cup or a gram scale and be sure everyone in the household is feeding the same amount.
Limit Treats & Reduce Portion Sizes: We all love to reward our pets! But treats can be calorie dense. Make sure to factor in treats for your pet’s daily intake or consider switching to very low-calorie treats. Vegetables such as carrots or celery bites are options that are considered safe. Another plan of action can be to cut back on their serving size by 10%; although, this should only be done with a recommendation from your veterinarian.
Water to Meals: Another trick, try adding water to their meal. Well-hydrated pets feel less hungry.
Exercise: Much like you, your pet needs exercise. A great way to increase your dog’s activity levels is to lengthen their daily walk by 10% per week. If your dog enjoys fetch, toss the ball a few extra times each day. Remember, watch your dog’s reaction to increased exercise. If they have difficulty breathing or are clearly slowing down throughout the activity, then stop.
Cats can be harder to motivate to exercise than dogs, but it is still important they remain active. Use toys to keep them moving. Spark some creativity, create an agility-like course in your home and use their meal to entice them to follow it.
Your pet’s weight can fluctuate as they age. Communicate any concerns about their weight with your veterinarian before making drastic changes to their food or exercise routine.
