San Diego Pet-Friendly Campgrounds: Where to Camp with Your Dog
San Diego’s year-round mild climate makes it one of the best cities in the country for dog-friendly outdoor adventures, and camping is no exception! Rules and amenities vary by campground, and checking ahead is always recommended to see what is available! If you are interested in going camping but are worried your dog may not be ready, Helen Woodward Animal Center’s Club Pet Boarding is a great option for your pet to stay!

What Makes a Campground Pet Friendly
The differences between pet friendly and only allowing dogs on leash:
- Designated pet areas or dog runs
- On-site water sources
- Proximity to pet-friendly trails
- Pet fee policies
- Breed or size restrictions.
More travelers are bringing their pets along on outdoor adventures. But just because a campground allows pets doesn’t necessarily make it pet friendly. The best pet-friendly campgrounds provide amenities, policies, and spaces designed to help pets stay safe, comfortable, and included in the camping experience.
It is important to understand and follow leash rules (typically 6-foot maximum) apply at nearly all California state campgrounds and national forests. Before you book a trip, make sure that your pet is trained first to avoid any trip complications. Helen Woodward Animal Center offers great training courses.
Dos Picos County Park, Ramona
Dos Picos is known for being one of the most dog-friendly San Diego County parks. Dogs are allowed on leash throughout. This camp site has an oak woodland setting and proximity to other Ramona-area trails which is great for making the most out of your trip! Dos Piscos does not have a pet fee, but they do have designated areas where the pets are allowed to go. As a general rule of thumb, bring plenty of water as this inland location gets hot in summer.
William Heise County Park, Julian
William Heise County Park is at a higher elevation and has cooler temps which would make this ideal for summer camping with dogs. Dogs are allowed on leash on most trails. This camp site is in close proximity to Julian’s downtown as a fun addition for the humans after a morning hike. Some trails within nearby Cuyamaca Rancho State Park do NOT allow dogs. Make sure to check the particular camping sites rules before you go!
Palomar Mountain State Park, Palomar Mountain
At Palomar Mountain State Park, dogs are allowed on leash in the campground, but restrictions apply on park trails. It is important to read signage and understand the boundaries before taking your dog on the trail. The beautiful towering pine and cedar forest setting and the proximity to the Palomar Observatory is a big draw for many humans because it is very serene and peaceful for many. We recommend taking a visit over to the Cleveland National Forest roads nearby where dogs on leash can hike more freely.
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, Borrego Springs
The Anza Borrego Desert State Park is California’s largest state park that allows dogs on roads and in developed campgrounds but NOT on trails. This campground is best visited in fall through spring due to heat. Another popular time to visit is Wildflower season (February to March). It is a very beautiful time in the desert.
San Elijo State Beach, Cardiff-by-the-Sea
San Elijo State Beach in Cardiff is one of the few campgrounds in San Diego County where you can camp steps from the ocean. It is an incredibly beautiful camp site- day and night. Dogs are allowed in the campground on leash. Note that dogs are not allowed on most San Diego state beaches. This campground has stunning views from day to night. You are able to hear the peaceful waves crashing on the shore. There is an amazing walking path nearby that many dogs go on. Many like this spot because of the walkability to many great restaurants and coffee shops. It is important to reserve your spot well in advance as this is a highly popular camp site!
Sweetwater Summit Regional Park, Bonita
The Sweetwater Summit Regional Park is a great option for first-time camping families. It is very close to the city, has easy access to a variety of things, and dogs are welcome on leash. This park also has equestrian trails and easy terrain. This is a great starter campground for San Diego residents who have not camped with their dog before.

Tips for Dog Friendly Camping in San Diego
- Pack a pet first aid kit: include tweezers for foxtails, a tick removal tool, paw balm, and your vet’s after-hours number.
- Bring more water than you think you need. Dogs dehydrate faster on hikes than their owners realize.
- Use a well-fitted harness instead of a collar if your dog pulls. It reduces strain on the throat and gives you more control on trails.
- Confirm your dog is up-to-date on vaccines and bring documentation, as some campgrounds require proof.
- Do a practice campout in your backyard or a local park if your dog has never slept outdoors overnight.
- Always pick up waste and carry bags in and out. Picking up after your pet keeps these sites open for future pet-friendly visits.
