Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. (April 1, 2024) – Helen Woodward Animal Center reminds the public that despite their funny hairdos, Chia Pets need love too. On a day known for joking and laughter, a sadness lingers on the shelves of Walmart, Target and CVS for the many Chia Pets who have yet to find a forever home. Helen Woodward Animal Center veterinarians are currently tending to several critical cases of slow-sprouters. The Center will notify the public when these orphan Chia Pets become available.
There is nothing that brightens up a home quite like the love of a furry family member and those who choose pet adoption are quick to sing the praises of orphan dogs and cats. For some reason, however, the seemingly less-appreciated orphan Chia can be seen abandoned on dollar store shelves and in bargain bins of drug stores, only considered for jokes and holiday White Elephant gift exchanges.
“It’s bewildering to us,” explained Helen Woodward Adoption Services Director Kendall Schulz. “They’re the sweetest little guys…and so quiet. We had a huge intake yesterday who weren’t doing well. It seems their prior owners didn’t understand the responsibilities required to really help them a-CHIA-ieve their full potential. We’re currently checking their water levels and critical cases are going into the intensive care plastic-bag greenhouses.”

The orphan Chia pets that arrived at Helen Woodward Animal Center yesterday are being given the same love and care received by all the Center’s orphan animal intakes. A thorough medical check, some cuddle and playtime, a warm place to sleep, and even some behavior training, have all been part of their welcome routine.
“They haven’t seemed to have much of an appetite,” stated Helen Woodward Animal Care Supervisor Jenny Bueche. “We worried at first but it appears as though they just aren’t big eaters.”
Knowing the hearts of adopters, Helen Woodward Animal Center hopes pet-lovers will keep these orphan Chias in their thoughts today, Monday, April 1st.
