Putting the “Aw” Back in PAWlitics

Animal Ambassadors Run in Inaugural Helen Woodward Animal Center Mayoral Race…

Rancho Santa Fe, CA (Oct. 28, 2020) – Helen Woodward Animal Center is making an effort to lighten the mood during one of the most intense political climates in history.  Starting today, voters of all ages will have an opportunity to select their favorite adorable animal ambassador and cast their vote for the Center’s first mayor.  Two horses, a dog, an African grey parrot, a goat, and a cat are all on the ballot in this year’s race that has been set up as both as a teaching tool and as a diversion in what has turned out to be a challenging year.

Six Center animal favorites were nominated last week with campaign promises that include… an ever-present “happy-go-lucky attitude,” absolutely “no fowl play” while in office, and a pledge to carry the responsibilities of the job on a “strong back.”  Running for office are equine resident Angel, long-time orphan pup Kyle, Humane Education parrot Tasha, Humane Education goat Millie, Therapeutic Riding instructor horse Jack, and long-time orphan cat Ms. Cake.  Their bios, histories, and political information, along with photos and videos can be found HERE.  Voting is open now and will close at midnight on November 3rd with the winner announced on November 5.  Voting is free.

“The political temperature is tough right now,” said Helen Woodward Education Manager Haylee Blake.  “We are hearing that a record-number of people are casting their votes in this year’s election and that party lines are more sharply drawn than ever before.  For kids, the tension can feel scary and overwhelming.  But cute fuzzy faces have a way of bringing people together and we’re hoping to get families talking about politics in a more light-hearted way.”

Each of the candidates have been seen hitting the campaign trail on all four legs, shaking paws, licking babies and reiterating their shared policy of unconditional love. While the Center won’t be accepting ballots on site, fans of the mayoral candidates can cast their vote every day of the week from the safety of their homes.

Additionally, Helen Woodward Animal Center reminds the public that deciding which orphan pet is right for you is a vote that saves a life.  Helen Woodward Animal Center has a huge number of kittens, puppies, cats and dogs that are all hoping you’ll take a look at their qualifications and give them your support.  This might be the one vote that’s guaranteed to give you the warm fuzzies this year.
