Competition Crowns Canines’ Unique Characteristics

Helen Woodward Animal Center Partners with Annual “Not Just for Ugly Dogs” Contest

Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.  (March 11, 2019) – With over two decades of celebrating everything that makes our furry companions unique, the San Diego Coastal Chamber of Commerce and Del Mar Kiwanis is hosting the 24th Annual “Not Just for Ugly Dogs” Contest, and Helen Woodward is honored to be a part of it! The yearly Del Mar canine competition formerly known as the “Ugly Dog” contest agrees there’s beauty to be found within in all animals and will crown a top dog in a variety of creative categories.  This year the adorable event has another beautiful mission – helping secure foods for the Center’s AniMeals program.  The festivities kick-off on Sunday, March 24, 2019 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds at 11 a.m.

The entire family, including four-legged members, is invited to a fun-filled day of activities for all ages, raffles, vendors and more. The highlight, of course, is the epic “Not Just for Ugly Dogs” Contest, which includes a wide variety of categories including owner look-alike, cutest puppy, most unusual natural markings, best trick, best costume, cutest mutt, and of course most beautiful female dog, most handsome male dog and ugliest dog.

This year, dog-loving hearts can also provide for pets in need while enjoying the event.  Helen Woodward Animal Center will be on site collecting dog and cat food donations. Those pet food donations will be delivered to the homebound seniors, military members, and pets of homeless individuals served by the AniMeals program which provided more than 400,000 meals to pets in need in 2018.  Attendees who donate unopened dog food will receive one raffle ticket per item donated for a chance to win 10 tickets to the September 24th SIP + SAVOR event at the Hilton ($300.00 value).  All attendees who bring 10 or more cans/bags of unopened dog food will automatically receive one complementary ticket to the SIP + SAVOR event.

“We are so happy to be a part of this terrific event,” said Helen Woodward Animal Center Project Manager Anne Edwards.  “It’s a really joyful day for the community and it means a lot to us that the San Diego Coastal Chamber of Commerce and Del Mar Kiwanis invited us to help increase our AniMeals donations.  Dogs are so generous with their love and affection and dog-lovers have that same quality.”
