Cancer Survivor looks to 2019 with a “New Leash on Life”

New Year, New Start for Blanca!

Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.  (Dec. 31, 2018) – As the clock strikes closer to midnight and we reflect on the year that’s quickly coming to an end, an orphan dog mom who we’ve come to love, is looking back at 2018 proud of the immense challenges she’s overcome. Now, with a new “leash on life” and fully recovered, cancer survivor Blanca looks ahead to her next grand adventure in 2019, finding her forever home. She starts her adoption journey on New Year’s Day at Helen Woodward Animal Center.

Blanca, a beautiful six year old terrier blend arrived at Helen Woodward Animal Center in late August with her seven newborn puppies just days after giving birth. She was found by a rescue partner who was unable to find arrangements to provide special care for the new family.

Helen Woodward Animal Center staff and foster volunteers immediately came to their rescue and brought Blanca and her babies to the Center in Rancho Santa Fe. It was then that our veterinarians discovered this new mom had an incredible journey in store. She had cancer.

Despite her difficult diagnoses, this courageous mom stayed strong for her tiny babies, knowing she had the expert medical care she needed here at the Center. She didn’t miss a step providing her pups with the nutrition, love and care they needed. Meanwhile, our medical staff outlined a cancer treatment plan for Blanca.

At eight weeks, Blanca’s puppies were weened, had received their spay and neuter surgeries and went up for adoption, quickly finding their new homes and beginning a new chapter. At the same time, Blanca was also beginning a new journey, starting chemotherapy.

For the last 2.5 months, Blanca has shown her true strength battling cancer. She’s received weekly treatments while staying with a loving foster family. She even rallied hundreds of supporters on Giving Tuesday who donated thousands to help more orphan pets like her who need specialized medical treatment before finding their forever homes.

Blanca is celebrating her clean bill of health by officially beginning her search for a new home on New Year’s Day. She’s ready to cuddle, play and live life to fullest with a forever family in 2019.

She’s looking forward to meeting potential adopters starting January 1st at 11 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. at Helen Woodward Animal Center located at 6523 Helen Woodward Way, Rancho Santa Fe, CA 92067. For more information, visit www.animalcenter.org or call 858-756-4117.
