How does the adoption process work?

If you are looking for a certain type of animal, you may want to call or check our website to see if we currently have it available. Or you may come down in person to browse through the kennels and cattery. When you see an animal you like, go to the front desk and ask for more information. After that you can fill out an application which is reviewed by one of our Adoption Counselors. The animal will be taken out so the two of you can interact. You will be able to review any background history we have on the animal as well. If you decide you'd like to adopt the animal and our experience show that it would be a good match, you'll be able to pay the adoption fee and begin life with your new best friend.

What type of animals do you adopt out?

We adopt out cats, dogs, puppies and kittens.

How do you get your animals?

Our animals come from a couple of different sources. Animals are surrendered by their owners for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it is because of a move, allergies or a lifestyle change. We also transfer animals from public shelters to relieve overcrowding.

If I need to give my pet up for adoption, what do I do?

Call us for an appointment. Each animal must pass a health and temperament exam given by our medical staff before it is accepted into the program. We accept only healthy pets.

How long do you keep the animals?

We keep the animals in the adoption kennels as long as they are physically and mentally healthy.

Do you take animals on a temporary basis?

No, but we do have an award winning modern boarding facility, Club Pet. For more information on boarding, click here.

Do you take strays?

No, we take only animals that have been relinquished by their owners. Strays and abandoned animals are handled by your local Animal Control agency, allowing owners to have a chance to find their lost pets.

What do I do if I find an injured or orphaned wild animal?

Throughout the year families bring injured baby animals and wildlife to Helen Woodward Animal Center. These are generally orphaned birds, raccoons, opossums, and other assorted "critters" that they have rescued. In many cases, these animals have been injured and need immediate medical care. Because Helen Woodward Animal Center deals only with domestic animals, we refer these animal lovers to other agencies in the area that deal specifically with wildlife. This takes up precious time that can make a major difference for animals that require special care and feeding. Here in the San Diego area we refer "Good Samaritans" to these wildlife rescue organizations:

Project Wildlife 619-225-9453 Wildlife Center 619-291-4587

These organizations can provide care for injured and orphaned wildlife of all kinds.

Can I request a particular breed?

Yes, we recommend that the individual call us periodically to see if the desired breed is available, or click here to see a live updated list of our currently available animals.

Do you always have puppies and kittens available?

Kittens are seasonal. We start receiving litters usually in May and they are available through November. Puppies are often available year round. Be sure to check with us for our selection.

I'm thinking about adopting a pet as a gift to a friend. What do you suggest?

We feel very strongly that the choice must be made by the person caring for the animal. Many of our animals have been relinquished because the client was given the pet as a present. Because animals are a lifelong commitment, it is very important that there be a bond between pet and owner.

Do you take donations of items to be used in the department?

Yes, we can always use blankets, towels, dog bones, dog and cat toys, etc. Sometimes we have specific needs that are published regularly in our newsletter, "The Companion", or click here to see our current wish list.

Are all your assistants volunteers?

No, but our paid staff is dependent on the help of volunteers to care for all the animals. They walk, bathe, socialize and help them feel more at home while they are here. We also have volunteers at the front desk to help with paperwork and phones.
