Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. (Aug. 19, 2026) – Class is back in session and school shopping is in full swing! Cat-lovers are invited to the cutest back-to-school supply sale ever with a 2-for-1 deal that will have the whole family purring!

Despite the warm temperatures, parents know that summertime is officially coming to a close and school shopping is in full swing. In honor of the season, and to reward the dedication of returning students, Helen Woodward Animal Center is offering a 2-for-1 deal on all “school supplies” during a special back-to-school supply sale which includes a kitten named Pencil, a kitten named Notebook, and a kitten named Backpack. The BOGO on kittens means cat-lovers can adopt one eligible kitten and take home a second kitten at no additional adoption fee. Schooltime shopping has never been so cute and cuddly!
Behind the playful promotion is a serious need. Helen Woodward Animal Center is experiencing an unusually high number of cats and kittens in need of homes, with every available Cattery condo currently occupied. A separate private room in the adoptions building, usually reserved for felines on medical hold or prepping for foster care, is also full of available cats and kittens just waiting “in line” for another feline to be adopted so it may move into the new space in the public Cattery.
With this week’s mad rush to get school supplies for kids returning to class, and in an effort to bring attention to the need for feline adopters, Helen Woodward Animal Center staff decided to name every available cat and kitten after the much sought after classroom items. Meet Pencil. Say hello to Notebook. Need a Backpack? How about one with four paws? Eraser, Lunchbox, Protractor, Highlighter, Crayon and Binder are also waiting to be checked off an animal-lover’s back-to-school list.
“For any student dreading hitting the books, I assure you that a cat (or two!) curled up in your lap may be the single greatest motivator to stay in and prep for upcoming exams,” said Adoption Services Director Kendall Schulz. “Not to mention that the lesson of rescuing a furry study buddy is a life-changing one that’s rarely taught in school.”
The BOGO promotion is available now and continues until these “school supplies” find their forever homes. After all, the best back-to-school purchase comes with a purr—and possibly a second purr at no extra charge.
