  • Protect Pets from Cold and Wet Conditions

Pets should be kept indoors during cold rainy days and nights whenever possible. For those who spend time outdoors, provide a dry, insulated shelter that is large enough for your pet to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. Add bedding for extra warmth and make sure water bowls are clean and do not freeze.

  • Monitor Outdoor Time

Puppies, senior pets, pets with short coats get cold quickly. Limit their time outside and consider longer fur coats or even pet sweaters for extra warmth. Foot booties or wiping paws after can protect their pads from cold and debris.

  • Keep Pets Well-Fed and Hydrated

Pets use extra energy to stay warm, so make sure they are well-nourished. They may need more calories during the colder months, especially if spending time outdoors. Always provide freshwater, preferably in plastic bowls instead of metal to prevent freezing and monitor weight to prevent unhealthy gain if they become less active during the colder months.

  • Be Aware of Holiday Hazards

The holidays bring decorations, lights, and treats that can be dangerous to pets. Keep tinsel, electrical cords. chocolate and other festive items out of reach. Make sure your pet has a quiet, comfortable space to reduce stress during celebrations.

  • Safety Around Cars

Outdoor cats may seek warmth under car hoods during cold weather. Always bang on your hood before starting your car to ensure no animals are hiding underneath. Encourage neighbors and family members to do the same to help keep all outdoor pets safe.
