DIY Fourth of July Poppers

Fireworks, picnics, barbeque and other Fourth of July traditions can be fun for people, but can be frightening and even dangerous for animals. When planning a Fourth of July celebration, it is important to remember to keep your furry friends safe during and after the festivities. Noisy fireworks can startle animals and cause them to run away. Prior to the 4th, you can make sure your pets have identification tags with up to date information and that they are microchipped. During the celebrations on Fourth of July, leave your pets at home and consider having them in a safe, escape-proof room or crate.

Instead of setting off fireworks or using sparklers that can be frightening to pets, create your own celebration with these Fourth of July poppers!

Popper Materials

  • (1) Paper cup
  • Decorative tape
  • (1) Balloon
  • Scissors
  • Foam sticker

Popper Instructions

1. Begin by cutting off the bottom of the paper cup.

2. Cut off the top of the balloon, just enough so that it will be able to stretch over the cup. Tie a knot at the bottom of the balloon.

3. Stretch the balloon over the bottom of the cup and secure it with decorative tape. Decorate your cup using foam stickers, paint, markers, or anything you would like!

4. Place a pom-pom or confetti* into your cup, pull back on the balloon, and let it go to watch your confetti fly!

*If you use confetti, be sure to keep it indoors or use environment-friendly confetti that will decompose quickly! Otherwise, the small particles outdoors easily blow or wash away into the environment and contribute to the micro trash issue.

Take your popper to your backyard to celebrate the 4th of July!

Due to Hurricane Hilary, all  departments will be closing at 3pm today.  Stay safe!
